Overview
- The Watford shutdown follows completed 3G retirements in Durham, Norwich, Telford and Guildford, with full UK disconnection scheduled by December
- Customers without 4G or 5G devices are receiving direct notices and must switch to a 4G SIM and compatible handset to keep mobile data services
- Known vulnerable users can obtain free 4G-ready handsets through O2’s Age UK partnership while others qualify for discounted upgrades
- Subscribers of virtual network operators on O2’s infrastructure—including Giffgaff, Tesco Mobile and Sky Mobile—will also lose 3G data access
- O2’s 3G network carries under 2% of its traffic, freeing spectrum for its £700 million Mobile Transformation Plan to expand 4G and 5G capacity
