NYT/Siena Puts Trump at 43% as McLaughlin Shows GOP Generic Lead

Sampling choices plus media consumption patterns drive the split.

Overview

  • The New York Times/Siena University poll of 1,313 registered voters (Sept. 22–27, ±3.2) finds 43% approve of President Trump’s job performance and 54% disapprove.
  • That survey shows a narrow Democratic edge on the generic congressional ballot, 47% to 45%.
  • A separate McLaughlin poll of 1,000 likely voters (Sept. 17–22) reports Republicans leading the generic ballot 47% to 41% and Trump at 49% approval to 46% disapproval.
  • The McLaughlin findings emphasize three media “silos,” with roughly one-third in left-leaning outlets, one-third in right-leaning outlets, and one-third consuming little or no cable news.
  • Both sets of polling highlight voter unease, with the Times/Siena finding two-thirds say the country is too divided to solve problems and McLaughlin recording the economy as the top concern, including 21% citing inflation specifically.
