Overview
- The NYPD report released Tuesday, Oct. 6, showed 489 shooting incidents, 594 shooting victims and 203 murders through September, the lowest totals on record for a first nine months of a year.
- Major crime fell 6.6% year-to-date and dropped 9.4% in the third quarter, with every borough reporting declines and the Bronx posting the largest decrease at about 11.9%.
- Police credited a precision-policing strategy and the seizure of more than 4,000 illegal guns this year for the citywide reductions in shootings and murders.
- Not all trends improved: confirmed hate crimes rose about 12.9% year-to-date with 53% targeting Jewish New Yorkers, and reported rapes increased roughly 3.7–4% with about one-quarter of those reports describing incidents from prior years.
- Public housing logged record lows in major crimes while transit crime was roughly flat, and officials said they will keep boosting protections for vulnerable communities and investigating hate and sexual-assault reports.
