NYPD Seeks Suspects in Bronx Killing of Rideshare Driver on New Year's Morning

The killing is believed to be New York City's first homicide of 2026 following a year of record-low violence.

Overview

  • Issa Mbolo-Isac, 55, was found shot in the head inside a blue Toyota near Morris Avenue and the Cross Bronx Expressway just before 7 a.m. on Jan. 1 and was pronounced dead at the scene.
  • Investigators say the encounter may have followed a minor collision, with published footage showing a man striking the driver's window and two males chasing the vehicle as it accelerated.
  • Police have made no arrests and released no suspect description, and they are asking the public to submit tips through Crime Stoppers.
  • Relatives say Mbolo-Isac, also known as Isac Issa, was a rideshare driver for about a decade, a married father of four, and an African immigrant whose family lives in West Africa.
  • The New York State Federation of Taxi Drivers is offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to an arrest, and the NYPD reports at least five shootings citywide in the year's first hours that left seven injured and one dead.
