Overview

  • A stranger approached a 21-year-old woman near West 47th Street and Eighth Avenue at about 3:30 a.m. on August 10, choking her unconscious and attempting a sexual assault as she regained consciousness.
  • Authorities recovered surveillance footage showing a man in a black T-shirt, black shorts and white sneakers fleeing west toward Ninth Avenue and released his images late Monday.
  • EMS responders took the victim to NYC Health + Hospitals/Metropolitan, where she was treated for neck pain and listed in stable condition.
  • Special Victims detectives have not made any arrests and continue canvassing the area while soliciting confidential leads via Crime Stoppers.
  • Recorded rapes citywide are up 22 percent year-to-date through August 3, a jump NYPD officials attribute in part to last September’s expansion of the state’s legal definition of rape.
