NYPD Investigates Alleged Hate Crime at Brooklyn Playground
Woman accused of attacking man and toddler, hurling anti-Islamic slurs amid rising hate crimes in New York City
- The NYPD is investigating an alleged hate crime at a Brooklyn playground where a woman is accused of attacking a man and his toddler son, hurling anti-Islamic slurs and throwing her cellphone and a cup of hot coffee at them.
- The victim, Ashish Prashar, was wearing a Palestinian scarf known as a keffiyeh at the time of the incident. He filmed the incident and posted it on social media, asking supporters to let the NYPD do their job instead of trying to track down the perpetrator on the Internet.
- The incident occurred in the vicinity of Edmonds Playground, which is connected to public Middle School 113 Ronald Edmonds Learning Center, and two other elementary schools. No children from these schools were known to have witnessed the event.
- Hate crimes are on the rise in New York City, with a 200% rise in anti-Semitic crimes since the Hamas-Israel war broke out. Of the 101 bias incidents in the city last month, 69 of them were directed at the Jewish community.
- In response to the rise in hate crimes, New York lawmakers have introduced a bill expanding the range of offenses that can be prosecuted as hate crimes and closing loopholes in existing laws.
