Overview
- Shots were fired just before 7:20 p.m. Thursday on Madison Avenue between East 95th and 96th streets after officers responded to 911 calls.
- Officers had received reports of a man with a gun near East 107th Street and then located a 20-year-old matching the description during a canvass.
- Police say the man pointed a gun at a deli worker, stole a phone, and later confronted an off-duty NYPD member working a paid detail at Mount Sinai.
- According to the NYPD, the man shot at responding officers as they exited their vehicles, officers returned fire, he was struck, and he was pronounced dead at Mount Sinai.
- Investigators recovered a firearm and several shell casings at the scene, no officer injuries were reported, and the area around East 96th Street and Madison Avenue was temporarily closed for the investigation.
