Overview

  • Officers opened fire while trying to stop a suspected carjacker, striking a 12-year detective in the hand and leg; he was listed in stable condition and scheduled for surgery.
  • The suspect, identified by police as 28-year-old Kevin Dubuisson, was arrested at the scene uninjured, and no firearm was recovered though an Uber driver reported he appeared to have one.
  • Police said Dubuisson had attempted to steal multiple cars minutes earlier near a gas station at Parsons Boulevard and 20th Avenue before targeting the Uber on the service road.
  • Commissioner Jessica Tisch said Dubuisson is a four-time convicted felon with 10 prior arrests who was released on parole in March and was issued a desk appearance ticket after an arrest the day before.
  • The NYPD said body-camera footage will be reviewed and described details as preliminary as Mayor Eric Adams and department leaders criticized state policies they say keep repeat offenders on the street.
