NYPD Deploys Robot Officer to Patrol Times Square Station

  • Police have begun testing K-5, a robot that will patrol a New York City subway station overnight.
  • The robot will be on patrol from midnight to 5 a.m. as part of a two-month pilot program.
  • K-5 will record video but not audio, and does not have facial recognition capabilities.
  • The robot costs $9 per hour to lease, below minimum wage.
  • A police officer will accompany the robot during the trial period.
