Overview

  • The draft Updated Strategic Plan calls for 64 clean energy projects totaling nearly 7 gigawatts of solar, wind and storage capacity, doubling the capacity of its inaugural January plan.
  • It proposes 20 new renewable generation facilities and 156 energy storage sites that together account for more than 3.8 gigawatts of new capacity.
  • NYPA developed the plan under expanded authority granted by Gov. Kathy Hochul in May 2023 to develop, own and operate renewable resources across New York State.
  • A public comment period runs through September 12, with virtual hearings scheduled for August 19 and August 20 to collect stakeholder input.
  • The draft document cautions that financing limits and the need to maintain an AA credit rating have shaped its recommendations despite calls for as much as 15 gigawatts of renewables.
