NYC Traffic Deaths Hit Record Low in 2025, DOT Reports

Officials credit Vision Zero progress, prompting pledges to accelerate protected lanes, bus priority and safer street designs.

Overview

  • The city recorded 205 traffic fatalities in 2025, a 19% drop from 2024 and one fewer than the previous low set in 2018.
  • Declines were steepest in the Bronx and Queens, with Manhattan and Brooklyn also down, while Staten Island saw a slight increase to 13 deaths.
  • Pedestrian deaths fell to 111 and total reported injuries were down 7.7% as of Dec. 15, with serious injuries slightly lower year over year.
  • The largest category decline was among motor-vehicle occupants, from 52 deaths in 2024 to 31 in 2025; moped and motorcyclist fatalities also fell, and e-bike deaths outpaced traditional-bike deaths.
  • City leaders say they will expand street redesigns and protected bike and bus lanes to sustain gains, as two New Year’s hit-and-run crashes that killed pedestrians opened 2026 investigations.
