NYC Traffic Deaths Fall to Record Low in 2025

City leaders credit Vision Zero measures, with plans to expand protected bike and bus lanes.

Overview

  • DOT data show 205 traffic fatalities in 2025, a 19% drop from 253 in 2024 and the lowest figure since records began in 1910.
  • The Bronx recorded the sharpest decline (54 to 33), with additional decreases in Queens, Manhattan, and Brooklyn, while Staten Island rose slightly to 13.
  • Fatalities fell across road-user groups, including a drop in motor vehicle occupant deaths from 52 to 31, as e-bike deaths continued to outpace those on traditional bicycles.
  • Reported injuries decreased about 7.7% to 47,557 as of Dec. 15, and traffic deaths are down roughly 31% since Vision Zero launched in 2014, edging past the previous low set in 2018.
  • Deputy Mayor Julia Kerson said the Mamdani administration will broaden street redesigns and add more protected lanes, noting high-profile crashes in 2025 and a new 15-mph e-bike limit with uncertain short-term effects.
