Overview

  • The Roosevelt Hotel, a key intake and shelter site for migrants since May 2023, will cease operations by June 2025.
  • Over 173,000 migrants were processed at the hotel, which served as a central hub during New York City's migrant crisis.
  • Weekly migrant arrivals in NYC have dropped significantly from 4,000 at the height of the crisis to approximately 350 in recent months.
  • The city plans to close 53 additional emergency shelters as the migrant population in its care has decreased from 69,000 in January 2024 to under 45,000.
  • The closure follows federal funding disputes, including the Trump administration reclaiming $80 million in FEMA grants previously allocated for migrant services.
