NYC Sets Late-April Restart for Flatbush Avenue Bus-Lane Overhaul

The overhaul targets walking-speed buses on a corridor that carries more than 130,000 daily riders.

Overview

  • DOT, which announced the restart Thursday, plans to resume construction in the last week of April and work through the summer into the fall.
  • The redesign adds center-running bus lanes with six boarding islands plus 29,000 square feet of new pedestrian space, 14 bike parking areas, and 11 loading zones.
  • Crews will rebuild the corridor in four phases, beginning by removing two existing islands at Flatbush and Atlantic and keeping two-way traffic by working on one side at a time.
  • Buses on this stretch can crawl at about 4 mph, and routes like the B41 serve riders who often lack cars and include many Black, female, and low-income New Yorkers.
  • Dedicated bus lanes will be policed by bus-mounted and fixed cameras, and officials urge drivers to avoid northern Flatbush or use alternate routes or transit during the work.
