NYC Mayor Imposes New Restrictions on Migrant Buses Amid Rising Numbers

Mayor Eric Adams' executive order requires advance notice and limits drop-off times, as cities like Chicago and Denver also grapple with the influx of migrants.

  • Mayor Eric Adams of New York City has issued an executive order requiring charter bus companies transporting migrants to provide 32 hours' advance notice of their arrival in the city and limiting the times of day at which migrants can be dropped off.
  • Companies that violate the executive order face class B misdemeanor charges, which could result in three months in jail and a $500 fine for individuals and a $2,000 fine for corporations. Buses violating the order may also be seized by the Police Department.
  • Over the past year-and-a-half, more than 161,000 migrants have arrived in New York City, with more than 68,000 remaining in city care, straining the city's finances.
  • Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson and Denver Mayor Mike Johnston have also expressed concerns about the influx of migrants and the lack of federal support, with Johnston stating that the situation will 'crush city budgets around the country.'
  • Texas Governor Greg Abbott has been transporting migrants to sanctuary cities like New York, Chicago, and Denver, a move criticized by the mayors as reckless and dangerous.
