NYC Installs Barriers and Narrows Lanes at Chinatown Crash Site, Proposes 20 MPH Speed Limit

The steps aim to protect pedestrians from speeding traffic on a stretch that has claimed three lives since 2020.

A speeding driver killed two people last month in Manhattan's Chinatown, police and prosectuors say.

Overview

  • DOT crews have placed concrete jersey barriers and sand-filled barrels and begun narrowing the two left-most Manhattan Bridge exit lanes at Canal Street and Bowery to slow vehicles and shield pedestrians.
  • The city plans to seek a reduction of the speed limit from 35 mph to 20 mph on the Manhattan Bridge approach after completing a 60-day public comment period.
  • Autumn Romero was indicted on August 6 on charges including murder, aggravated vehicular homicide and vehicular manslaughter for allegedly driving 109 mph in a stolen car that killed cyclist Kevin Scott Cruickshank and pedestrian May Kwok.
  • Passenger Kennedy Lecraft faces weapons and possession of stolen property counts after police found a bottle of alcohol and two guns in the crashed Chevrolet Malibu.
  • The DOT is fast-tracking community engagement for a full Canal Street corridor redesign, moving feedback sessions up several months to address long-standing safety failures.
