NYC Finalizes Times Square New Year’s Eve Plan With Closures, Controlled Access and Extra Transit

Officials report robust security with finalized transit operations.

Overview

  • City leaders say there are no known specific threats, as thousands of NYPD officers and specialized units, drones and helicopters will secure Times Square and surrounding areas.
  • Street closures roll out in stages starting 2 a.m. Wednesday, with broader Midtown shutdowns by late morning and afternoon, parking garages stopping operations at 11 a.m. and truck restrictions between Sixth and Eighth avenues from 34th to 59th streets.
  • Times Square viewing access opens at 3 p.m. via Sixth or Eighth Avenue at designated streets, prohibited items will be enforced, no public restrooms are available and anyone who exits a viewing area cannot re-enter.
  • Subways run a weekday schedule on Dec. 31 with boosted evening and overnight service, selective Midtown station and entrance closures, and trains skipping stops around Times Square from 15 minutes before the ball drop until 15 minutes after.
  • Buses operate a reduced weekday schedule on New Year’s Eve and a Sunday schedule on Jan. 1, while LIRR, Metro-North and NJ Transit add evening and overnight trains, with alcohol banned on LIRR and Metro-North from noon Wednesday to noon Thursday.
