NYC Ferry Unveils Redesigned Map Taking Effect Dec. 8, Adding Cross-Borough Links

Officials project faster trips with lower taxpayer costs.

Overview

  • The new network launches Dec. 8 with a direct Staten IslandBrooklyn connection and a combined Soundview–Rockaway route creating a one-seat ride from Throgs Neck to the Rockaways.
  • East River service will operate as two routes for most of the day to speed trips, with a local that serves all stops on weekday middays and on winter weekends to preserve connectivity.
  • South Brooklyn boats gain direct Midtown access, while Bay Ridge and Sunset Park come off the regular route pending a summer 2026 weekend pilot to test restoring those stops.
  • NYCEDC plans two new landings at East Harlem’s 125th Street and at the MADE/Bush Terminal in Sunset Park, and will expand the East 34th Street terminal to add capacity.
  • Citing roughly 15,000 public comments with strong support, officials forecast at least 1 million additional riders over two years and report a current $8.33 per-rider subsidy with a projected $1 decline by 2028; the ferry fare is $4.50 as the subway and bus fare moves to $3 in January.
