NY Governor Commutes Sentence of Rapper G. Dep

The decision allows Travell “G. Dep” Coleman, who confessed to a 1993 murder, to seek parole earlier than his original 2025 date.

  • Rapper Travell “G. Dep” Coleman, who confessed to a nearly two-decade-old cold case murder in 2010, has been granted clemency by New York Governor Kathy Hochul.
  • Coleman, now 49, has served 13 of a 15-year-to-life sentence and will now be able to seek parole earlier than his original 2025 date.
  • The clemency is part of a larger announcement by Hochul, who granted clemency to 16 individuals, including 12 pardons and four commutations.
  • While in prison, Coleman earned an associate’s degree and facilitated violence prevention and sobriety counseling programs.
  • Despite support for Coleman's clemency application from the prosecutor in the case and the judge who sentenced him, the victim's brother, Robert Henkel, has criticized the decision, calling it a 'farce.'
