NWS Warns of Overnight Black Ice in New York and Massachusetts Through Early Thursday

Falling temperatures are refreezing earlier moisture, creating slick untreated surfaces until conditions warm midmorning.

Overview

  • The weather service issued an 8:02 p.m. Wednesday alert for central and upstate New York counties including Oneida, Onondaga, Tompkins and Broome, in effect until midnight.
  • A second New York alert at 8:15 p.m. covered parts of Herkimer, Fulton, Schenectady, Saratoga, Albany, Rensselaer, Montgomery and Schoharie counties until 12:15 a.m. Thursday.
  • Massachusetts received an updated 9:41 p.m. report covering 13 counties, including Suffolk, Middlesex, Worcester and Essex, effective until 9 a.m. Thursday.
  • The alerts cite refreezing of moisture from mist, drizzle and fog, with the highest risk on untreated roads, bridges, overpasses, sidewalks and parking lots.
  • Motorists and pedestrians are urged to use caution overnight and during the early commute, as some surfaces may appear wet but be slick, with conditions expected to improve by midmorning.
