NWS Warns of Morning Black Ice Across Parts of New York

Overnight rain is refreezing with the early temperature drop, creating hard-to-see slick spots on untreated surfaces.

  • Alerts issued around 5:21 a.m. run until 9:15 a.m. for Herkimer, Fulton, Montgomery, Schoharie, Schenectady, Albany, Greene and Ulster counties.
  • A separate notice at 5:21 a.m. covers Herkimer, Hamilton and Warren counties with the same 9:15 a.m. end time.
  • An earlier 5:19 a.m. report warned of patchy ice until 8 a.m. for Oneida, Yates, Seneca, Cayuga, Onondaga, Steuben, Schuyler, Chemung, Tompkins, Madison, Cortland, Chenango, Otsego, Tioga, Broome, Delaware and Sullivan counties.
  • Forecasters say standing water from the overnight rainfall may refreeze near daybreak, especially in the western Mohawk Valley and eastern Catskills.
  • Similar short-term advisories were issued for Northern Wayne, Bradford and Susquehanna counties in northeast Pennsylvania until 8 a.m.
