NWS Warns of Dangerous Surf Along Marquette, Alger and Mason County Beaches

Overview

  • The National Weather Service issued a beach hazards statement for Marquette and Alger counties valid from 3 a.m. to 8 p.m. EDT Sunday warning of high wave action and strong rip currents.
  • A separate advisory for Mason County runs from 2 p.m. Sunday through midnight Monday, highlighting 3 to 5 foot waves north of Big Sable Point.
  • Winds from the north and northeast are expected to produce the strongest currents at Ludington State Park, Nordhouse Dunes Recreation Area and Lake Michigan Recreation Area.
  • Forecasters cited past fatalities and rescues at Middle Bay north of Presque Isle, Little Presque Isle, the Au Train River mouth, Grand Marais Harbor and Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore.
  • Beachgoers are urged to stay out of the water, avoid piers and consult local authorities on potential closures.
