NWS Posts Lake Erie Lakeshore Flood Watch as Western New York Faces Inland Flood Risk

Forecasters warn that a rapid lake rise plus heavy rain could trigger flooding.

Overview

  • An inland flood watch runs from Sunday 1 p.m. to Monday 4 p.m. for Northern and Southern Erie, Niagara, Orleans, Genesee, Wyoming, Chautauqua, Cattaraugus and Allegany counties.
  • The National Weather Service says excessive runoff could flood Buffalo‑area creeks and low‑lying or poor‑drainage urban locations.
  • A separate lakeshore flood watch covers Northern and Southern Erie and Chautauqua counties from Monday 4 a.m. to Tuesday 1 a.m.
  • Forecasters note significant lakeshore flooding is possible along Route 5 in Hamburg, Buffalo Harbor and Canalside, and Dunkirk Harbor, with very high waves likely to cause shoreline erosion.
  • Residents are urged to protect property and monitor local media or NOAA Weather Radio, and officials warn never to drive through floodwaters since about 12 inches of fast‑moving water can sweep away most vehicles.
