NWS Issues Short-Term Michigan Thunderstorm Warnings With Hail and 40–50 mph Gusts

Doppler radar tracked eastbound cells that prompted county alerts, including an Interstate 80 advisory in St. Joseph County.

  • Bay and Tuscola counties were alerted 3:37–4:15 p.m. EDT as radar showed a storm over Essexville moving east at 30 mph with up to 0.5-inch hail and 50 mph gusts.
  • Van Buren and Kalamazoo counties received a 4:22–4:45 p.m. alert for a cell near Bangor moving east at 35 mph producing pea-sized hail and gusts near 40 mph.
  • Genesee County was warned from 4:50 to 5:45 p.m. for a storm over Swartz Creek moving east at 20 mph with marble-sized hail and 40 mph gusts.
  • An updated 6:25 p.m. alert for St. Joseph County, Indiana, cited a storm near Middlebury moving east at 25 mph with pea-sized hail and 40 mph gusts.
  • The St. Joseph County update identified Interstate 80 between mile markers 99 and 123 and urged anyone outdoors to seek shelter as gusty winds could down tree limbs.
