NWS Issues Short-Lived Snow Squall Warnings for Northwestern Pa. and Western N.Y.

Fast-moving bands can drop visibility below a quarter mile within minutes, prompting forecasters to urge drivers to delay trips until they pass.

  • At 12:54 p.m., a warning was issued for Crawford and Erie counties in Pennsylvania until 1:30 p.m.
  • The Pennsylvania squall stretched from near Conneaut to near North Bloomfield, moving northeast around 40 mph and affecting I-90 and I-79 with impacts to towns including Erie, Edinboro, Girard and Conneaut Lake.
  • At 1:45 p.m., a separate warning covered Cattaraugus, Chautauqua and Erie counties in Western New York until 2:30 p.m.
  • The New York squall tracked east at about 45 mph from near Evangola State Park to Waterford, impacting I-90 between exits 49–61 and I-86 between exits 4–17, including Buffalo, Amherst and Jamestown.
  • Hazards include intense bursts of snow, blowing snow with gusts up to or above 35 mph, and visibility rapidly falling below one-quarter mile, with NWS urging drivers to postpone travel or slow down, use lights and increase following distance if already on the road.
