NWS Issues Short-Lived Dense Fog Advisories in Alabama, Michigan and Oregon

Drivers face quarter-mile visibility in affected corridors, with subfreezing Michigan readings raising the risk of slick bridges.

Overview

  • On Monday at 5:07 a.m. local time, the National Weather Service issued a dense fog advisory for Lawrence and Cullman counties in northwest Alabama until 8 a.m., warning of visibility less than one mile and hazardous driving conditions.
  • On Sunday at 5:01 a.m. EST, forecasters alerted 12 Michigan counties through 7:15 a.m., noting patchy dense fog with pockets of one-quarter-mile visibility or less and temperatures cold enough to create icy spots on bridges.
  • Also Sunday, an advisory covered the East Central Willamette Valley and Benton County Lowlands in Oregon from 8:51 a.m. to 11 a.m., with the NWS cautioning that visibility could fall to a quarter mile or less.
  • The weather service advised motorists to slow down, use low-beam headlights, avoid high beams, keep extra following distance, and use fog lights if available.
  • For near-zero visibility, guidance urged turning on hazard lights and pulling into a safe location to stop, or if only a roadside is available, stopping well off the roadway with lights off except hazards and the parking brake set.
