NWS Issues Red Flag Warnings for Kansas and Colorado on Monday

Critical fire weather reflects very dry air paired with strong gusts, with risk expected to reach North and Central Texas on Tuesday.

Overview

  • The National Weather Service offices in Goodland, Kansas, and in Pueblo and Denver, Colorado, issued Red Flag Warnings on Monday, with expiration expected around 6 p.m. local time.
  • In northwest Kansas, sustained winds of 25 to 35 miles per hour with gusts up to 55 mph combined with relative humidity near 12 percent to create dangerous fire conditions.
  • Across Colorado, winds ranged from 15 to 35 mph with gusts up to 55 mph, with relative humidity as low as 12 percent near Pueblo and about 14 percent near Denver.
  • Officials urged people to halt outdoor burning and avoid spark-producing activities, comply with local burn bans, secure tow chains, maintain vehicle brakes and tires, and never discard lit cigarettes on the ground.
  • Forecasters said elevated fire weather could extend across parts of the central and southern Plains and shift into north and central Texas by Tuesday, following similar warnings in Vermont and northern New York on Sunday.
