NWS Issues Oregon Flood Watch for Next Week as Coastal Tidal Overflow Advisory Takes Effect Today

Forecasters warn persistent rain could trigger river and urban flooding with landslides possible in steep terrain.

Overview

  • The National Weather Service issued a flood watch at 1:10 a.m. Saturday covering Monday 4 a.m. to Friday 4 a.m. for wide areas including the north and central Oregon coast, Coast Range, Columbia Gorge and the Portland metro.
  • The watch highlights the potential for river and urban flooding, with landslides and debris flows possible in steep areas and near recent burn scars.
  • A separate coastal flood advisory for the Clatsop County coast is in effect today from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., with minor tidal overflow expected during high tides.
  • Forecasters project total tides up to 11.0 feet at Toke Point and 10.2 feet at Tongue Point, which could produce up to one foot of inundation in low-lying areas near bays, sloughs and lower river reaches.
  • Recent advisories also warned of minor flooding and water over roadways, with NWS urging, “Turn around, don’t drown,” noting 12 inches of fast-moving water can carry most cars and asking the public to report observed flooding to local authorities.
