NWS Issues New Year’s Winter Alerts: U.P. Advisory and Somerset County Storm Warning

Drivers should prepare for rapid whiteouts from overnight snow squalls.

Overview

  • Ontonagon and Houghton counties in Michigan are under a winter weather advisory from 1 p.m. Tuesday to 1 p.m. Wednesday with 2 to 6 inches of snow and localized bands up to 9 inches, greatest southwest of Houghton along M-26.
  • Somerset County, Pennsylvania faces a winter storm warning from 4 p.m. Wednesday to 10 a.m. Thursday with more than 6 inches possible on the western ridges and wind gusts up to 40 mph.
  • Potter and Cameron counties in Pennsylvania have a winter weather advisory from 4 p.m. Wednesday to 4 p.m. Thursday with 1 to 3 inches of snow expected.
  • A line of snow showers and squalls is expected around or shortly after midnight on New Year’s Eve, and the NWS urges motorists to delay travel or exit highways if a Snow Squall Warning is issued.
  • The NWS warns of difficult travel during affected commutes and advises carrying emergency supplies, keeping gas tanks full, and driving cautiously or postponing nonessential trips.
