NWS Issues Multi-State Flash Flood, Severe Storm Alerts as Heavy Rains Soak Communities

Forecasters warn saturated ground plus intense downpours are driving flash flooding, damaging winds, hail, frequent lightning.

Overview

  • Flash flood warnings were posted for parts of Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Kentucky, Ohio and Texas, with 3.5–5 inches of rain reported in the KY–OH region and flooding confirmed in Flatwoods, Russell and Ironton.
  • In Southeast Michigan, the Weather Service issued a flash flood warning for Washtenaw County after 1–4 inches of rain, a flood watch for Oakland, Macomb and Wayne counties until 8 p.m., and a flood advisory for Huron and Tuscola counties.
  • Pennsylvania’s Adams County received an updated severe thunderstorm warning on Thursday, calling for wind gusts up to 60 mph and penny-sized hail as a storm moved east from Gettysburg.
  • Alabama saw a Wednesday evening flood advisory for Jefferson and Shelby counties for urban and small stream flooding, followed by an early Friday alert for strong storms in Jackson County with gusts to 40 mph and localized flooding risk.
  • The Weather Service cautioned that small creeks, urban areas, highways and underpasses are vulnerable, urging drivers to avoid flooded roads and to report flooding when it is safe to do so.
