NWS Issues Freeze Warning for Lancaster and Lebanon Counties

Clear skies with light winds will let temperatures fall below freezing, threatening crops, sensitive plants, and unprotected outdoor plumbing.

Overview

  • The National Weather Service placed a Freeze Warning for Lancaster and Lebanon counties from 12 a.m. to 9 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 24, when sub‑freezing temperatures are expected.
  • A wider set of freeze watches and warnings covers parts of southeastern Pennsylvania and New Jersey, including Berks, Lehigh, Upper Bucks, western Chester and Montgomery counties and Morris, Somerset and Hunterdon in New Jersey.
  • Overnight lows are forecast near 30–32°F, which raises the risk of frost and killing freezes in vulnerable spots away from urban heat like airports or the I‑95 corridor.
  • Lancaster and Lebanon remain in an active growing season, so a killing freeze would end local crop production and growers are urged to cover plants or bring them indoors and protect outdoor plumbing.
  • The cold nights follow a dry cold front; daytime weather will be sunny with highs near the 60s and the dry, cool pattern is expected to continue into next week due to persistent high pressure and radiational cooling overnight.
