NWS Issues Flood Watch for Central and South-Central Texas

A fast-moving cold front could produce intense short-duration rainfall producing life-threatening flash flooding that may disrupt rivers, roads or large outdoor events.

Overview

  • The National Weather Service issued the flood watch on Tuesday, effective 7 p.m. Wednesday through 7 p.m. Friday for much of Central and South-Central Texas.
  • Forecasters expect widespread 2 to 4 inches of rain with isolated totals of 8 inches or more and short-lived rainfall rates of 2 to 3 inches per hour that can trigger rapid flash flooding.
  • The watch covers the Texas Hill Country, Edwards Plateau and much of the I-35 corridor, including Austin, San Antonio, New Braunfels and San Marcos.
  • The highest-impact period is forecast for Thursday into Friday morning, with San Antonio likely to see the heaviest rain between about noon Thursday and noon Friday.
  • Officials warn rivers, creeks, low-water crossings and urban drainage can flood quickly, the watch overlaps the first day of Austin City Limits, and residents should monitor warnings and avoid driving through flooded roadways.
