NWS Issues Flash Flood Warning for Southwestern San Diego County as New Year’s Storm Soaks Southern California

Forecasters cited quick rises in small waterways and street flooding from heavy overnight rain.

  • The National Weather Service posted a flash flood warning for southwestern San Diego County from 6:33 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. on New Year’s Day.
  • Flood advisories were issued earlier for Los Angeles County until 8:15 a.m. and for Riverside, San Bernardino, and Orange counties until 7:06 a.m.
  • Forecasters reported about 1.5 inches of rain in parts of San Diego County with rainfall rates projected at 0.25 to 0.75 inches per hour.
  • Areas flagged included urban low spots, underpasses, small creeks and arroyos, and named waterways such as the San Diego, Otay, Tijuana, and San Dieguito rivers and San Diego Bay.
  • Officials urged residents to avoid floodwater and not drive through flooded roads, repeating the guidance to “Turn around, don’t drown.”
