NWS Issues Flash Flood Warning as Severe Thunderstorm Hits Eastern San Diego County

Forecasters urge drivers to avoid flooded crossings to reduce the risk of deadly flash flooding.

Overview

  • The National Weather Service issued a flash flood warning for southeastern San Diego County until 5 p.m., following torrential downpours in mountain and desert areas.
  • A separate severe thunderstorm warning for east central San Diego County ran until 3 p.m., with reported winds up to 70 mph and nickel-size hail.
  • Between 0.5 and 1.25 inches of rain had already fallen in warned zones, with life‑threatening flooding possible in creeks, urban areas, highways and low-water crossings.
  • Impacted locations included I-8 between Pine Valley and Boulevard, Alpine, Mount Laguna, Lake Morena, Pine Valley, Campo, Potrero, Barrett Lake, Dulzura and Hwy S1 near Lake Cuyamaca.
  • Forecasters expected the main storm to diminish by early evening, but said monsoonal moisture could keep heavy rainfall possible through Wednesday, with some mountain rates approaching 2 inches per hour.
