NWS Issues Early-Morning Flood Alerts Across Southern California, With San Diego Under Flash Flood Warning

The weather service urged drivers to avoid flooded roads, warning that even shallow, fast-moving water can be deadly.

Overview

  • Los Angeles County was placed under a flood advisory at 2:14 a.m. Thursday, in effect until 8:15 a.m., for urban and small‑stream flooding from prolonged rain.
  • Riverside, San Bernardino, and Orange counties were under a separate flood advisory issued at 3:06 a.m., set to expire at 7:06 a.m., due to excessive rainfall and runoff.
  • A flash flood warning for southwestern San Diego County was issued at 6:33 a.m. and remained in effect until 9:30 a.m., with thunderstorms bringing heavy rain to communities including Chula Vista, El Cajon, and National City.
  • San Diego County also had a flood advisory covering areas such as Oceanside, Escondido, and Solana Beach that was expected to last until 9:49 a.m.
  • Forecasters warned of ponding on roads, minor flooding in low‑lying and poor‑drainage areas, and rises in normally dry arroyos, and reiterated “Turn around, don’t drown,” noting about 6 inches of fast water can knock a person down and roughly 12 inches can carry away most vehicles.
