NWS Issues Beach Hazards Statements for Much of Southern California Coast Starting Sunday

A south to southwest swell is expected to generate 4–7 foot surf, producing dangerous rip currents that prompt calls to avoid the water or stay near lifeguards.

Overview

  • Los Angeles/Oxnard office alerts run from Sunday morning through Wednesday, October 1, at 6 p.m., covering Catalina and Santa Barbara Islands, Ventura County, Malibu and Los Angeles County beaches, plus parts of the Central Coast.
  • San Diego office alerts cover the Orange County coast and San Diego County coastal areas from Sunday 6 a.m. through Tuesday, September 30, at 11 p.m.
  • Forecasters expect surf generally at 4–7 feet with local sets to 8 feet on south and southwest facing beaches, with the San Diego office noting a 200° swell of 4–5 feet at 12 seconds.
  • Hazards include strong rip currents, waves washing people off beaches and rocks, and the potential for small boats to capsize nearshore, with shallow coastal flooding possible on particularly vulnerable south-facing beaches.
  • NWS guidance urges people to stay out of the water or remain near staffed lifeguard towers, to avoid rock jetties, and notes surf should begin to gradually lower late Tuesday in the south.
