NWS Confirms Three Northern Michigan Tornadoes, Including Torch Lake Waterspout

A Gaylord storm survey raised Michigan’s 2025 tornado count to 33 after an isolated Sept. 22 supercell produced brief EF-U, EF-0 and EF-1 twisters with no reported injuries.

Overview

  • Surveyors verified a sequence of three tornadoes from one supercell on Sept. 22, tracked from west of Traverse City to Torch Lake and Bellaire.
  • The first was a very short-lived EF-U near Lake Ann with an estimated 500-foot path and a narrow 30-foot width based on video evidence.
  • Over Torch Lake, a tornadic waterspout was rated EF-0 with peak winds of 75 mph, traveling about 750 feet on water and briefly onshore at roughly 30 feet wide.
  • A later EF-1 near Bellaire reached an estimated 90 mph, stayed on the ground for about 4,500 feet, widened to roughly 90 feet, and lasted around two minutes.
  • No injuries or damage were documented, and the NWS issued a tornado warning for central Antrim County at 5:57 p.m. after rotation near Kewadin was spotted around 5:50 p.m.
