NWS Confirms Long-Track EF-2 Tornado in Central Illinois as Additional Twisters Verified

Officials focus on damage surveys, power restoration, temporary shelter.

  • An EF-2 tornado with peak winds of 120 mph tore through eastern Christian County near Long Creek, staying on the ground for 23.62 miles with a width near 250 yards, the National Weather Service said.
  • The storm ripped roofs from at least eight homes near Decatur, snapped large trees and tossed a garage, with the NWS placing the touchdown at 3:59 p.m. and dissipation along State Highway 32 in Piatt County about a half-hour later.
  • The NWS also confirmed an EF-1 tornado in Tazewell County along Allentown Road with 98 mph peak winds that destroyed outbuildings and snapped eight power poles.
  • Five tornadoes were confirmed in Iroquois and Livingston counties, including an EF-1 that damaged homes on Pontiac’s northwest side; a microburst caused straight-line wind damage near Fairbury and Forrest.
  • Macon County EMA reported a brief touchdown near Blue Mound before a second tornado struck Long Creek; utilities reported thousands without power Sunday, with most service restored by Monday and no injuries reported.
