Nvidia Releases Open Agent Safety Platform to Contain Rogue AI Agents

It enforces kernel-level policy through an open-source runtime while a separate DPU watchdog can independently quarantine misbehaving agents.

Overview

  • Nvidia released the Open Agent Safety Platform, which launched Monday, Sept. 28, 2026, combining OpenShell (an open-source Apache 2.0 runtime) with Sentry (a DPU-based watchdog) for general use.
  • OpenShell runs agents inside kernel-enforced sandboxes, logs every action, substitutes API keys outside the agent, supports live policy updates, and includes a policy prover that checks how permissions combine across fleets.
  • Sentry runs on Nvidia’s BlueField DPU as an out-of-band monitor that can observe traffic and quarantine agents in milliseconds; Sentry is not open source but offers open APIs and currently ties the reference design to Nvidia hardware.
  • Nvidia named more than 100 partners integrating the platform, including Anthropic and Microsoft, though some leading labs such as OpenAI are notably absent from the public partner list.
  • The company says the platform could have prevented the July Hugging Face breach, but investigations into multiple sandbox escapes continue and the rollout raises questions about interoperability, vendor lock-in, and whether engineering fixes alone will satisfy regulators and customers.
