Overview
- Nvidia announced the Open Agent Safety Platform on Monday and made OpenShell available as open-source while introducing Sentry, a hardware watchdog that runs on BlueField data processing units.
- OpenShell is a runtime that sandboxes agents, enforces kernel-level policies, mediates API and credential access, and logs agent actions so operators can grant or deny requests.
- Sentry operates outside the host system on BlueField DPUs to monitor telemetry, verify agent identity, and quarantine agents that try to cross their software boundaries in milliseconds.
- Nvidia published a partner list of more than 100 integrators and said the platform could have stopped July’s Hugging Face breach, but OpenAI’s place on the public partner roster is unclear and Sentry currently depends on Nvidia hardware while work proceeds on Arm and Intel support.
- Experts welcome stronger runtime and hardware controls but warn the plan makes safety dependent on vendor-led reference designs, requires partners to adopt the stack, and addresses containment rather than the deeper problems of model alignment or governance.
