Nvidia Brings Petaflop On-Device AI to Windows Laptops

RTX Spark pairs a Blackwell GPU with a Grace CPU and shared memory so developers can run larger models locally.

Overview

  • Major PC makers are shipping RTX Spark Windows laptops that use a single Nvidia chip combining a Blackwell GPU and Grace CPU with a unified memory pool of up to 128GB to boost on-device AI throughput toward roughly 1 petaflop of FP4 performance.
  • Nvidia says the platform can run models up to roughly 120 billion parameters and supplies models such as Nemotron 3.5 Bolt 74B-A9B while offering native CUDA, PyTorch and WSL tooling for Windows on Arm to support familiar developer workflows.
  • Early reviews show strong local inference for many models but also note real limits from heat, battery drain and partial app or runtime compatibility that can reduce sustained performance for heavy or concurrent workloads.
  • IT teams are advised to run limited pilots to test application compatibility, measure end-to-end response times and compare total costs of ownership against cloud spending before committing to broad deployments.
  • Local processing increases control over where data is handled but does not guarantee privacy because telemetry, connected services and cloud fallbacks can still send data externally, and Microsoft has pitched Windows as a hybrid local/cloud AI platform.
