Nvidia Adds Advanced Shader Delivery to GeForce Driver

The update lets Windows 11 users skip local shader compilation to shorten game launch times for supported titles.

Overview

  • Nvidia shipped GeForce driver 621.01 Wednesday to add support for Microsoft’s Advanced Shader Delivery on RTX GPUs and it requires Windows 11 plus the Xbox PC app to function.
  • Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 and Gears of War: E-Day are the first games to ship precompiled shader databases through the Xbox PC app for eligible PCs.
  • Microsoft and Nvidia say the system moves shader compilation into the cloud, which can cut compile time by roughly 95 percent and deliver near‑100 percent shader cache hits in supported titles.
  • Early tests and user reports show much lower shader-related RAM use in some cases but note that CPU load and other causes of stutter, such as asset streaming and traversal, can still produce hitches.
  • Wider gains depend on developer or engine integration and on continued cross‑vendor coordination since AMD, Intel and Qualcomm already support precompilation and broader title support will determine real-world impact.
