Nurse, 26, Shares Story After Amputation for Rare Bone Cancer to Urge Faster Diagnosis

She describes months of misattributed calf pain before scans revealed a tumour encasing vital structures.

Overview

  • The intensive care nurse is telling her story during the Bone Cancer Research Trust’s Bone Cancer Awareness Week, which runs 6–12 October.
  • An MRI on 11 November 2024 showed a large mass filling her calf, and a biopsy on 29 November confirmed spindle cell sarcoma of the bone.
  • Doctors said the tumour had completely encased nerves and blood vessels, so she underwent an above-the-knee amputation on 17 December 2024.
  • She is learning to use a prosthetic after a smooth operation and recovery, though early walking was exhausting and difficult.
  • She has returned to work in a non-clinical role and will have surveillance scans every three months for two years, as the charity highlights how rare these tumours are in people her age.
