Overview
- NUJS students set an October 31 deadline for Vice-Chancellor Nirmal Kanti Chakrabarti to resign or be replaced, warning of an indefinite protest from November if the demand is not met.
- The overnight gherao concluded Sunday morning as students delivered a letter and a 47-point list of concerns spanning infrastructure, academics and finance, which he declined to accept as an ultimatum.
- The protests intensified after the Supreme Court on September 12 dismissed a faculty sexual harassment complaint on limitation grounds and directed that its judgment be included in the vice-chancellor’s résumé.
- Chakrabarti denied the allegations, stressed that the complaint was rejected by the local committee, the Calcutta High Court and the Supreme Court on limitation, and said he is pursuing legal remedies.
- A section of faculty has begun non-cooperation, and students urged action from the executive council during a campus meeting attended by Justice Dipankar Dutta and state minister Chandrima Bhattacharya.
