Nuñez Backs Revived 210-Day Detention Plan for Foreigners Deemed Dangerous

Matignon must clear the revised draft for a parliamentary filing by Charles Rodwell.

Overview

  • Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez said he supports extending the maximum time in administrative detention to 210 days for certain non-citizens considered dangerous.
  • The previous attempt to raise the cap from 90 days was largely struck down by the Constitutional Council in early August.
  • Nuñez said his predecessor had the censured article rewritten to meet constitutional standards and that the new drafting suits him.
  • The revised plan would apply to foreigners facing expulsion who were convicted of serious offenses or deemed a particularly grave threat to public order.
  • The measure awaits Matignon's validation, after which deputy Charles Rodwell is to introduce it in Parliament, and for now the 210-day limit applies only to terrorism convictions.
