NTPC Delivers Five Hydrogen-Powered Buses for Commercial Operations in Leh

Powered by solar-generated green hydrogen, the service reduces carbon emissions, produces oxygen, operates at one of the world’s highest public transport altitudes

Following the formal flag-off of the hydrogen buses, Chaudhary conducted a detailed inspection of NTPC’s green hydrogen plant, including its production, storage, and dispensing systems. (File)

Overview

  • On June 19, NTPC handed over five hydrogen fuel cell buses to the State Industrial Development Corporation at the Palam mobility station in Leh.
  • The fleet represents India’s first commercial deployment of hydrogen-powered public transport and sets a global benchmark for high-altitude operations.
  • A 1.7 MW solar plant co-located at 11,562 feet supplies renewable power for the green hydrogen production that fuels the buses.
  • NTPC projects the project will cut about 350 metric tons of carbon emissions annually and generate roughly 230 metric tons of pure oxygen.
  • Administrative Secretary Bhupesh Chaudhary and Chief Secretary Pawan Kotwal lauded the initiative’s potential to inform future hydrogen mobility projects across India.
