NSW Supreme Court Hears Opening Arguments in Sultana Murder Trial

Forensic witness testimony was introduced today to link Paul Sultana to Dayna Isaac’s death; his defence says his moves to dispose of the body followed by car arson show panic rather than guilt.

Overview

  • Crown prosecutor Yvette Prowse told Justice Peter Garling that Isaac died of strangulation and suffered blunt-force injuries with two cords bound around her neck.
  • Prowse said Sultana called his mother for help moving the body before driving Isaac’s car to bushland near Castlereagh and setting it alight, then burning items at home.
  • The Crown will present DNA evidence matching Sultana found on Isaac’s clothing and neighbour accounts of screaming followed by a man leaving the apartment and returning with an older woman.
  • Three women, including two former intimate partners, are slated to testify that Sultana showed a tendency for violence when relationships broke down.
  • Defence counsel Gregory Woods KC contends Sultana’s post-incident conduct stemmed from panic over possible false accusations and insists there is no direct eyewitness linking him to the killing.
