Overview
- Officers went to a Wells Street home in Springfield near Gosford just before 3:30pm for a welfare check.
- Police say a 49-year-old man armed himself with a screwdriver and other sharp objects, refused to cooperate, and a perimeter was established.
- At about 9:25pm the man allegedly tried to burn an officer using a lit aerosol can and then stabbed toward an officer multiple times.
- Tactical police forced entry, shot the man, and paramedics treated him at the scene where he died; one officer sustained a minor injury.
- Homicide detectives are investigating as a declared critical incident, with review by the Professional Standards Command under oversight from the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission, and police plan a briefing on Thursday.
