NSW Police Charge Man Over Alleged Nazi Tattoos Displayed at Newcastle Beach

The case proceeds under NSW’s 2022 ban on public Nazi symbols, recently strengthened after antisemitic incidents.

Overview

  • A 36-year-old was arrested at a home in Urunga about 6:30pm on Saturday after detectives reviewed photographs taken by a beachgoer.
  • Police charged the man with knowingly displaying a Nazi symbol by public act and causing a prohibited Nazi symbol to be displayed in a public place.
  • He was granted strict conditional bail and is scheduled to appear at Newcastle Local Court on 22 January 2026.
  • The report followed a 24 December incident at Bar Beach in which tattoos allegedly showed SS bolts and references to white power, documented and submitted to Crime Stoppers.
  • NSW Police said Newcastle City Police District is investigating with Operation Shelter under laws that criminalise public Nazi symbols and treat visible tattoos as public acts.
