NSW National Parks Firefighter Killed During Bulahdelah Blaze

Officials have launched a formal investigation into the on-duty death.

Overview

  • The firefighter was fatally struck by a tree late Sunday near Little Nugra Road at Nerong, about 90km north of Newcastle, according to police and NPWS.
  • Paramedics attended but the firefighter died at the scene, with a crime scene established, WorkSafe notified and a coroner’s report to be prepared.
  • The Bulahdelah fire has burned about 3,414 hectares and is listed as being controlled, with activity south of Booral Road and on both sides of the Pacific Highway.
  • Roughly 700 personnel are working across NSW on about 60 fires, including nine uncontained, as authorities strengthen lines following a weekend of extreme conditions.
  • At least 16 homes were destroyed at Koolewong and four at Bulahdelah, with disaster assistance activated and tributes offered by the premier and prime minister.
